The incident happened Saturday, July 4 at approximately 10:05 p.m.  in Port Jefferson Station.

Calros Diaz,  29, was attending a family gathering in the backyard of the residence located on Robert Court when he attempted to light a mortar-style firework, Suffolk County Police said. 

The device exploded, striking Diaz in the face and severely injuring one of his eyes.

Diaz, of Port Jefferson Station, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
